History of the College

In 1905, recognizing the need to provide theological training for “preachers of the gospel,” Baylor University’s theological department became Baylor Theological Seminary. Five professors began teaching those who were called to the gospel ministry. In 1908, the seminary was granted its own charter as Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. The seminary functioned on the grounds of Baylor University until 1910 when it was relocated to its new property in Fort Worth, Texas, and its newly constructed building, Fort Worth Hall.

In 2005, exactly 100 years later, trustees approved the founding of the seminary’s first undergraduate institution, The College at Southwestern (TCS), a fully accredited baccalaureate college on the campus of the seminary. Ironically, five professors were hired to begin teaching the 77 students who enrolled in its first semester in fall 2005. Moreover, the offices were located in none other than Fort Worth Hall.
